The Department of Labor and Department of Education created WIOA (Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act) to help remove barriers for those who have trouble finding a high-quality career. The WIOA program helps those who are entering, or re-entering, the workforce acquire the skills and credentials needed to gain in-demand jobs that transition into long-lasting careers.

Who Funds the WIOA Grant? The Department of Labor in partnership with the Department of Education

How do I Find Out If I’m Eligible? Funds are distributed through American Job Centers (AJC). You can check your eligibility here.

How much is available per person? This depends on a few factors including what state/region you live in, how much funding is allocated to your AJC, and other considerations.

How long before I can begin training? After you are determined eligible and suitable for a WIOA Training Account and complete all the required paperwork, evaluation, and assessments, every effort is made to help you as soon as possible. Courses start weekly.

WIOA Eligibility

You’re Eligible for the WIOA program if…

Z

You are 18 or older.

Z

You are a U.S. Citizen.

Z

You have a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

Z

You are eligible for government benefits.

Z

You are a dislocated worker.

Example: Plant/factory closures, layoffs, homemakers that have lost their primary income

You have been terminated or laid off.

OR received notice of termination/layoff AND you are eligible for or have exhausted entitlement to unemployment compensation, OR are employed at a facility in which the employer has announced the facility will close w/in 180 days
Z

You are self-employed but unemployed.

Farmers, ranchers, and fishermen who are unemployed due to economic conditions or natural disaster

The ultimate goal of the WIOA program is to end the cycle of unemployment by providing you the training to build a lifelong career. That’s why it’s important for you to consider in-demand industries with plenty of growth opportunities.

Credentials and certifications are a great option because they usually only require 5 to 12 months to complete followed by a certification exam. In addition, credentials are stackable, which allows you to build upon them and quickly grow your career.
