Career Insight

What does a Health Information Specialist do?

As medical records and health information technician, you’ll need to bring a lot of skills to the table. Your work will require tech knowledge, but you’ll also need to be an effective communicator with strong analytical skills. Health Information Specialist is one of the few jobs in the medical field in which there’s no direct patient care. Rather, you’ll be working in an office setting and spend the bulk of your workday on a computer. While other responsibilities might vary, the typical health information specialist can expect to perform the following duties:

 Reviewing patient records for accuracy

Tracking patient outcomes for quality assessment

 Maintaining confidentiality of patient records

Recording data for collection, storage, analysis, retrieval, and reporting

 Collecting electronic health care data
